Get Involved with the Southwest Virginia Hokies!

If you are an alumnus/alumna that loves Virginia Tech and would like to keep the Hokie spirit alive in the Smyth, Washington, Russell, Abingdon, Wise, Norton, Dickenson, and Bristol, Virginia areas we hope that you will consider getting involved. The below position is currently open.

President

The chapter president will serve as the chapter’s primary point of contact for alumni, students, parents of students, friends of the University, University Advancement, and the Alumni Association. They are responsible for leading all aspects of the chapter’s activities.

Tasks & Duties:

  • Preside over all meetings, including regular meetings of the executive committee
  • Serve as the primary Alumni Association representative within the community
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of all committees (if applicable)
  • Submit annual chapter plan on or before July 1st each year
  • Keep in regular contact with VTAA chapter liaison about plans and other chapter information and issues
  • Review outstanding chapter awards checklist monthly to ensure compliance
  • Help recruit and cultivate alumni leaders and volunteers in your area
  • Encourage support of Virginia Tech through time, talent, and treasure
  • Disseminate Advancement messages to chapter officers and members as needed.
  • Encourage and thank volunteers!
  • Train and prepare President-Elect for the office of President
  • Perform other duties with the chapter as needed.

 

Time Commitment:

Dependent on chapter need; Approximately 6-10 hours per month.

Secretary

The chapter secretary is responsible for maintaining a written record of chapter activities and for all written correspondence in regards to the business of the chapter. They are responsible for taking and distributing minutes of all meetings and ensuring the information is sent to the chapter president and staff liaison.

Tasks & Duties:

  • Attend chapter meetings regularly
  • Record and submit meeting and event notes to the Virginia Tech Alumni Association chapter liaison.
  • Keep the records of the chapter
  • Schedule and share regular meeting information with chapter officers, volunteers, and Virginia Tech Alumni Association chapter liaison.
  • Work with president to complete and file annual chapter plan, chapter year-end financial reporting, and rosters with the Virginia Tech Alumni Association liaison.
  • Assist chapter president in reviewing outstanding chapter awards checklist monthly to ensure compliance.
  • Assist with maintenance of the chapter website and social media platforms
  • Attend volunteer training with the Virginia Tech Alumni Association when appropriate.
  • Train and prepare volunteer replacement when appropriate
  • Perform other duties with the chapter as needed.

Time Commitment:

Dependent on chapter need; Approximately 2- 4 hours per month.
